NATHAN SIMPSON
(b. 1973, d.
TBA) is an Australian artist living on the south coast of New South
Wales. Most of his drawings and paintings draw on mythology, folktales
and fairytales and other literary subjects. They are also inspired by
the archaic simplicity of prehistoric, ancient and medieval
iconography, naive painting and children's art, particularly in the use
of stylisation, lack of pictorial perspective and an 'awkward' sense of
balance and proportion. These works are based on a
simple word phrase, the text of which is often incorporated into the
image.
He has exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions and was included
in the 2004 Blake Prize travelling exhibition.
